Zentangle Turtles

Students have been destressing and unwinding this week through the wonderful art form of ‘Zentangle.‘ At first glance, this art form appears to be glorified doodling. But it is much more than that. “Traditional Zentangle includes a ritual to help get in touch with life while creating beautiful art. Tangles are used as learning skills for school children, as stress reduction for adults and they help develop dexterity. In addition, Zentangles can be fabulous works of art that resemble etchings.” 3rd and 4th graders created wonderful Zentangle Turtles. Their turtle designs were photocopied on to watercolor paper and the students then added color with watercolor paints. The turtle was chosen as an art project to complement Shady Oak’s environmental fundraiser. It is hoped that the student’s art work can be used for this year’s fundraising t-shirt design.  I know I say this every week, but this has to be my favorite art project 🙂

About stephwheatley

Formerly from Britain, I have lived in the USA since 1989. My qualifications are in library science, but I've had a passion for all things artsy and crafty for as long as I can remember! I became the Primary Art Teacher at Shady Oak Christian School in 2009 and am thoroughly enjoying myself. I teach students at both Shady Oak Christian School and Shady Oak Primary School. It's wonderful to be able to share my passion at a place that believes in the importance of learning through creativity. Please check out the Shady Oak websites at http://www.shadyoak.net/ and http://www.shadyoakprimary.com/ to learn more about these unique schools located in Richmond, TX.

Love it! The colors are so vibrant for watercolor paint. I wish ALL the pics could go on the Fun Run t-shirt!

  2. The black and white turtles may all make it on the t-shirt. Similar to the bee t-shirt from several years ago. 🙂

  3. Holly Lixey says:

    Awesome project!!! Where’s Ashlyn’s??

  4. Thank you. This post displays the 3rd and 4th grade work. Please check the post for “2nd Grade Zentangle Turtles” . Typically, I am able to upload the pictures from the week’s art lesson on the Friday of the same week. This depends on the children finishing their project and if I’m not out of town which was the case this week. I appreciate your patience.
