Underwater Self Portrait

Welcome back everyone! It’s great to be blogging again after a three month hiatus! What a fabulous first week the 2nd and 3rd grade had in the art room. The start of the year is always a little hectic in the art room as the students have to create two pieces for the ‘Artware by You’ fundraiser!

The first project  required the students to draw themselves floating in water. Self-portraits are always challenging, and this project posed a further twist as students had to draw their bodies at an angle. They were instructed to sketch their head first. This served as a guide to draw their body and limbs in proportion. They were encouraged to think about how their body moves in water. I loved how imaginative the students were. One student drew himself upside down and others floated on their back. Notice how hands and limbs disappear off the edge of the paper. This gives the feeling of movement, almost as if each of them were floating off the page! Next, they had fun imagining how their hair moves in water. Color was added using crayon for the details and watercolor paint was used to create the watery background. Salt was sprinkled over the paint while still wet, to create texture. I love how these turned out and hope you do too. You will be receiving these pieces in October along with order forms for the ‘Artware by You’ fundraiser. Great first week 2nd and 3rd. I’m happy to see your familiar faces again as well as some new ones 🙂

What a wonderful start to the year! The kids did a great job of portraying a peace that comes with floating in water. I’m sure Joyce(the swimmer) really appreciated them! Miss you Mrs. Wheatley!

    • Thanks Cathy 🙂 They had great fun with this project. I’m glad that you saw ‘peace’ in their pictures! It was more a case of ‘happy exuberance’ in the art room!!!!! Miss you too 😦
