Russian Country Cottage Windows

Along with the rest of the world, excitement has been building at Shady Oak for the start of the winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. This presented an opportunity for the children to learn about a different country and culture. I came across a wonderful project on the art blog, Painted Paper in the Art Room on Russian Cottage Windows. http://paintedpaperintheartroom.blogspot.com/2012/03/russian-cottage-windows.html

This project was quite challenging for the 1st and 2nd graders (as well as their art teacher!) But I think you’ll agree, the end results were worth it. It was a multi-step process. The students had to measure, cut and glue paper to create their windows before they could paint their flowers. They also created a variety of painted paper flower pots to glue in their windows. I love how creative they were with their choice of brightly colored flowers. Great job 1st and 2nd graders. 🙂

About stephwheatley

Formerly from Britain, I have lived in the USA since 1989. My qualifications are in library science, but I've had a passion for all things artsy and crafty for as long as I can remember! I became the Primary Art Teacher at Shady Oak Christian School in 2009 and am thoroughly enjoying myself. I teach students at both Shady Oak Christian School and Shady Oak Primary School. It's wonderful to be able to share my passion at a place that believes in the importance of learning through creativity. Please check out the Shady Oak websites at http://www.shadyoak.net/ and http://www.shadyoakprimary.com/ to learn more about these unique schools located in Richmond, TX.
